Fire Safety on Construction Sites

There are two main laws which building and construction companys need to be aware of regarding fire safety on site. The Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM 2007) and the Regulatory Reform (fire safety) Order 2005, (RRO 2005). The HSE enforce and prosecute if necessary under the CDM 2007 and the local fire authority enforce and prosecute if necessary under the RRO 2005.

Fire safety under either of these laws is risk assessment based. Suitable training must be provided to all employees who work on site. A fire risk assessment must be carried out adequately and maintained.

CDM 2007 applies to construction sites which do not affect other workplaces or places where persons currently live.

The RRO 2005 covers construction sites which do affect other persons workplaces or homes, for example refurbishment work.
