Business Sectors > Residential care homes

Residential care homes by their nature present an often unique and high risk compared to many other premises. There is an obvious sleeping life risk coupled with the fact that often the residents are either physically and/or cognitively less able than other people.

Fire safety within care homes is of paramount importance. Care homes are high on the priority list for enforcement officers from the local fire authorities and attract a lot of attention because of the inherent fire safety risks. All staff need to know what to do when the alarm sounds - for whatever reason. A comprehensive fire risk assessment and fire action plan must be in place!

This was bought home in the saddest way in 2004 when a relatively small fire in a nursing home in Scotland killed 10 residents immediately and 4 further residents some days later. Poor fire safety training and fire awareness were partly to blame.
