Shops and other retail outlets

Nearly all shops and retail outlets are covered by the Regulatory Reform (fire safety) Order 2005, (RRO 2005).

Fire safety in shops has improved dramatically over the last few decades since serious fires like the Woolworths fire in Manchester, 1979. Serious fires still do occur. This fire occurred in Oxford Street in London and required 30 pumping appliances and aerial platforms to extinguish it. No one was hurt fortunately, but the fire cost the company £536,000 in fines and court costs as a result of the subsequent prosecution under the RRO 2005. A lack of adequate fire safety training was one of the main issues highlighted in court.
